West Lothian Council has approved a new design layout for a proposed complex care housing development at Cawburn Road, Pumpherston.
The Council Executive approved plans for the proposed new £3million project in June this year. This week, the Council Executive approved a new design layout for the complex following guidance from leading industry design experts.
Jo MacPherson, Head of Social Policy said: "We have worked with leading providers of this type of care and learnt from their experiences building similar complexes elsewhere in Scotland. The new plans provide a more integrated/community approach to the development with distinct terraces of housing. Following engagement with potential service providers it is felt that the new design will provide a modern environment for clients, allowing for more individual care while retaining the benefits of share care."
It's expected that building work will begin next summer subject to all approvals being obtained with a completion date expected in the Autumn of 2021. West Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) is working with NHS Lothian and other Lothian HSCPs on a redesign and modernisation programme for adults with learning disabilities which will see a significant shift in the balance of care from hospital to community settings by 2020/21. The programme focuses on people receiving care, support and treatment within the community where possible.
Executive councillor for Social Policy, Angela Doran said: "The proposed project will enable the council to effectively contribute to the overarching strategic approach to redesigning learning disability services in West Lothian.
"The council is committed to supporting the most vulnerable members of our communities and delivering services to support them that are accessible. To achieve this it is essential that we have appropriate property assets from which to accommodate these essential services within our communities. The proposed project for the development of a Complex Care Housing facility supports these principles.
"The new design will greatly enhance the care for people with complex care requirements and will provide appropriate housing for them within a credential community setting."
The proposed accommodation consists of sixteen one bedroom residences that each provide a main living room, separate double bedroom, galley kitchen, built in storage and toilet / bathroom. Two of the units will also be adaptable to incorporate mobility hoists as appropriate. All will have their own small separate garden area as well access to the wider garden grounds. The residencies have been designed and will be fitted out to ensure they are homely whilst also being practical in terms of management.
