Carness Housing Development Prompts Road Closures

Construction News Image
A series of road works are set to take place as part of a new Council housing development at Carness.

This work will see a new footway built to provide connectivity to the existing footway network on Carness Road, Weyland Bay and Islands View Road, as well as streetlighting and carriageway repairs.

Carness Road in Kirkwall will be closed between its junctions with Weyland Bay and Craigiefield roads, from Monday 19 July 2021 to late August, to facilitate the works. The closure will be in place from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, throughout.

A suggested detour via Junction Road, Clay Loan, Dundas Crescent, School Place, East Road, Work Road and Carness Road will be signposted.

Public Bus Service 9 (Town Service) will be affected by the road closures – buses will be diverted through Moar Drive re-joining the route on Islands View Road, meaning there will be no pickups on Carness Road between Weyland Bay and Craigiefield Roads between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.

Work will be carried out in two stages – with the first stage taking place between Monday 19 July to Friday 30 July, followed by a two week break before works restart with the second stage on Monday 16 August to 27 August.

The new Carness housing development will see 32 Council homes delivered in Phase 1, followed by a further 14 in Phase 2.
