East Dunbartonshire Council has unveiled a brand new play park at Woodhead Park in Kirkintilloch just in time for Spring. Boasting an array of new equipment, the park design was voted for by the community and has been given a big "thumbs up" by local children.
The Council's Depute Chief Executive, Ann Davie, said: "The new play area at Woodhead Park is a super addition to the park. The fact that the final design was chosen by the community means that all the children and young people who participated can feel ownership over the final result."
She added: "The range and quality of equipment is really superb and will provide a safe and fun environment for children for many years to come."
In 2021, the Council carried out an extensive online consultation giving residents the opportunity to choose a new particular play area design for three locations across East Dunbartonshire: Woodhead Park, Kirkintilloch, and Meadowburn North Play Area and Doune Crescent, both in Bishopbriggs.
The consultation exercise attracted a large number of votes on the Council’s website. At Woodhead Park, a well-used play park near Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre, residents were given a choice of two designs and Option 2 on the consultation won the contract.
The new park was delivered at a cost of £100k and includes a huge new Birds Nest Tree with a rope bridge and slide and a variety of swings including a gondola rope swing and an inclusive harness swing.
There is also a colourful toddler zone multiplay unit, a wheelchair inclusive roundabout and various "springies". The most popular units from the original play area – the climbing pyramid, the rope swing roundabout and a couple of games panels – have been retained. The play area is surrounded by seating and picnic tables for the adults when the kids are off exploring.
