Falkirk Council's Empty Homes Team has saved eight private properties in St Crispin's Place from demolition, bringing the vital resources back into use.
Built around the early 1900s, the properties had lain empty for extended periods, deteriorating over time, and becoming an eyesore in the local community. Since it was set up ten years ago, the Empty Homes team has been trying to get the properties back into use.
Joining the team in 2016, Empty Homes Officer Elaine Hall, took on the challenging task of identifying and locating the homeowner who lived abroad.
The properties were eventually put on the market in 2021 and purchased by local developer David Richardson of Urban Property. The properties have been completely renovated and are now being used as privately rented homes.
Part of the team's remit is to increase the availability of affordable housing throughout the Council area. This includes supporting private owners to bring empty homes back into use by offering advice, information, and working alongside them to revitalise their properties.
The team work hard to identify and locate homeowners – which can take time and can often be challenging especially if owners are difficult to contact, are in care, or have sadly passed away.
The involvement of Empty Home Officers doesn't end once the properties are sold; they continue to support the restoration process.
Councillor Gary Bouse, spokesperson for Housing & Communities said: "Encouraging owners to bring their homes back into use is vital because it breathes life into derelict buildings, revitalises communities and helps to provide much needed affordable housing.
"This is another example of the fantastic work carried out by Elaine and Wendy from Falkirk Council's empty homes team."
There are currently over 700 privately owned homes that have remained vacant for more than six months. Homeowners who would like help or more information can contact the Empty Homes team at eh@falkirk.gov.uk. Empty homes can also be reported through the Council's website.
