Latest Dundee Climate Fund 2.0 Launches

Construction News Image
Dundee City Council has announced the launch of the Dundee Climate Fund 2.0, which includes a new matching process linking community generated ideas to tackle climate change with organisations able to deliver.

After a consultation process involving several hundred local people their ideas have been filtered by what is achievable and deliverable and now the call is out to community groups and projects to make them happen using a share of the £365,000 fund.

From a standing start the initial round of Dundee Climate Fund earlier this year delivered Scotland's first council-led green participatory budgeting initiative attracting almost 30 applications and more than 4300 votes.

Heather Anderson, convener of Dundee City Council's climate, environment and biodiversity committee said: "It is clear that when faced with a challenge on the scale of the climate emergency that no one body and no single solution is going to be able to address all of the issues.

"Ground-up, community-driven solutions that the Dundee Climate Fund can back with resources to make them happen and local groups who want to implement them in our neighbourhoods is a key way to deliver for the city, the country and the wider world."

Around 30 community generated ideas have now been collected under the Dundee Climate Fund themes of:

• energy - reducing consumption, promoting energy efficiency, use of renewables;

• transport - encouraging active travel, decarbonising transport;

• waste - reducing waste, recycling, reusing resources;

• resilience - improving greenspaces, biodiversity, local food growing; and

• raising awareness (building capacity) - increasing awareness, engaging communities and young people in climate change.

Now Dundee-based not-for-profit, constituted groups will be able to find details of the concepts and how to match their skills and apply for funding at dundeesvoice.communitychoices.

All applications must be made by October 29, and after being screened for their feasibility and eligibility by a dedicated reviewing panel, the allocation of funding will be determined by a public vote.

Dundee declared a climate emergency in June 2019 to recognise the serious environmental, social and economic challenges faced by climate change, and launched the Dundee Climate Action Plan with the backing of local companies and organisations.

A total of 12 local projects are currently benefitting from a share of around £385,000 from the first round of the Dundee Climate Fund.
