Network Rail Announce £500,000 Addiewell Station Upgrade Works

Construction News Image
Network Rail has announced a £500,000 programme of upgrade works at Addiewell Station, due to get underway this weekend.

Railway workers will demolish the existing platform and replace it with a more modern and easily maintained surface as part of an ongoing investment in improving Scotland's Railway.

During the 12-week project, which begins at 01:00hrs on Saturday 10 February, no services will call at Addiewell, with the station closed to members of the public until 06:00hrs on Friday 10 May.

For the entirety of the project, passengers travelling in both directions to Addiewell will disembark at West Calder station and rail replacement buses will take them to Addiewell.

Those travelling from Addiewell will travel on the rail replacement bus to West Calder station to use train services.

Repairs have been carried out over the years so the station can be used safely by passengers and rail services, however, advances in platform maintenance technology mean this work will be more effective and longer lasting.

Drainage will be improved, eliminating the risk of puddles gathering during heavy rain or after snow and ice melts and the surface of the platform will be smoothed to reduce the risk of tripping.

Helen Agnew, project manager, Network Rail, said: "The essential work we're carrying out at Addiewell will mean passengers will be able to move around the station safely and comfortably for years to come.

"We understand that closing the platform temporarily may cause some inconvenience in the short term, but we've worked with colleagues at ScotRail to minimise disruption through provision of replacement buses.

"We thank passengers and neighbours for their patience and understanding throughout these works."

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: "The work being carried out by our colleagues at Network Rail will greatly enhance the journey experience for our customers using Addiewell station, delivering a new, more modern platform.

"During the project, customers will need to use replacement buses to travel between Addiewell and West Calder.

"We would urge people to allow more time for their journey, and check on our social media channels for any updates."

Work will take place both during the day and at night, with nightshift working hours being 23:00hrs – 06:00hrs on Saturdays – Thursdays.
