Seagreen Wind Energy has donated a total of £244,200 to support an ambitious community path project promoting health and wellbeing around the town.
The Carnoustie Green Circular project, funded by the Seagreen Wind Energy Community Benefit Fund and delivered by Carnoustie Community Development Trust, will see a 12 km circular waymarked route created around Carnoustie. The hope is that this will encourage people and tourists to explore and enjoy both coastal and countryside views in the area, whilst learning about important local spots.
The project was chosen from funding applications received following a call for local project ideas which went to the community benefit fund panel, formed by Carnoustie Community Council, who were impressed with the scope and potential of the project to engage the public.
As the project moves forward the Development Trust will invite representatives from various community organisations and individuals with key skills to form a community liaison panel to help develop the path network. The Seagreen team recognised the potential for the project to provide a lasting legacy for its offshore wind farm, which began generating clean power off the Angus coast last year.
Derek Miller, Chair of Carnoustie Community Development Trust, said: "We are grateful to Seagreen and Carnoustie Community Council for this opportunity to highlight the walks and cycle routes to be explored and enjoyed whether on foot or on two wheels.
"Through development of the project, we hope to incorporate information on locations along the path network of local heritage or natural history interest and will look to involve local groups and individuals who have local knowledge and information to share. Many Carnoustie residents will know the paths used, but this project will make it easier for visitors and newer residents to enjoy the paths around Carnoustie and along the seafront."
Craig Mullen, Senior Community Investment for Seagreen Wind Energy added: "We hope that this fantastic project will encourage people to appreciate the wonder of what's on their doorstep. The Seagreen Wind Farm off the coast of Angus can be seen out to sea on a clear day and this path is a legacy for the project and the area. We hope that both the community and visitors enjoy using the Green Circular route to promote health and wellbeing through physical activity and social interaction."
