Over 50 specialist contractors have attended the launch of the NSCC Fair Payment Campaign hosted by Scottish law firm, Anderson Strathern LLP, at its head office in Edinburgh.
The half-day seminar, which officially kicked off the campaign in Scotland, welcomed managing directors, contracts managers and quantity surveyors from a variety of specialist trades. Delegates were shown how to implement the objectives of the Fair Payment Campaign within their businesses to improve their chances of getting paid on time.
Supported by Credit Shield and ConstructionSkills, the seminar covered topics including obtaining certainty of payment; getting paid within 30 days; offering retention bonds in place of cash retentions; using suspension and adjudication and obtaining credit insurance.
The seminar also saw the launch of the Scottish edition of the NSCC Specialist Contractor's Toolkit to advise Specialist Contractors in Scotland of the differences in English and Scottish law. The toolkit, which provides advice on improving payment terms and conditions, is the only publication of its kind in the industry and is proving a hit with Specialist Contractors of all sizes.
John Riches of Henry Cooper Consultants, which endorsed the toolkit, said: "There are no gimmicks here. The Toolkit is full of sound and practical advice and well worth a read, particularly for those at the sharp end as there is sufficient advice to assist in improving industry practices.
"If the Toolkit is used properly and before any work takes place, I think there will be a general improvement in making contracts and provisions in contracts that truly reflect what is to be done and how it is to be paid for."
