HQ Building Signals New Era For National Park Authority

The opening of its new state-of-the-art £5m headquarters in Balloch has signalled the start of a new era for the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park Authority (NPA).

Designed by award winning Scottish architects, Page\Park, and packed with a host of environmental features the stunning building sets a new standard for sustainable development, not just within the Park, but across the UK.

Not only is 'Carrochan', as the building has been named, the largest green timber structure in the UK, but it has also achieved the highest 'excellent' BREEAM rating. The building will provide facilities for a number of partner organisations and will also be a significant asset for communities throughout the Park.

Amongst its many other environmentally sustainable features, the building has an indigenous Douglas fir timber structural frame, is heated by a biomass boiler system and solar gain and is largely naturally ventilated with high levels of natural light.

Insulation comes from the wool of 2500 sheep and the build incorporates a SUDs solution (sustainable urban drainage system) in the form of a reed bed.

The formal opening of the building, which was conducted by Environment Minister, Mike Russell MSP, included the premiere of a specially composed suite of music, entitled 'Carrochan', by internationally acclaimed composer Eddie McGuire.

A festival atmosphere surrounded proceedings with a range of environmental displays and demonstrations by community groups and Park organisations, and performances by young and not so young talent from around the Park.

Speaking at the event, Environment Minister Mike Russell MSP, said: "This spectacular, innovative building is a tribute to the National Park Authority and should inspire others as to what is possible in the delivery of modern, sustainable public buildings.

"The long list of environmental credentials - from the indigenous Douglas Fir frame to the biomass and solar heating systems - demonstrates that the Park Authority is serious about sustainability and willing to practice what it preaches.

"The Park's staff and board deserve credit in their success not only inmeasures to deal with antisocial behaviour."

The NPA is building on its award winning Community Futures initiative and is planning a new initiative called Green Futures. The Authority is also working with Greater Glasgow schools and youth groups to introduce young people to something other than the urban environment. A range of environmental initiatives, such as the hugely successful £500,000 Natural Heritage Grant Scheme, and various Climate Change task groups have also been launched.
