Regeneration Of Laurieston One Step Closer To Reality.

The demolition of two multi-storey tower blocks by Glasgow Housing Association has brought the regeneration of the Laurieston area one step closer to reality.

It took just under 10 seconds and less than 120 kilos of explosives to blow down the two 23-storey-high blocks at No's 40/80 and 45/85 Stirlingfauld Place. The two double blocks were erected in the early 70s and contained a total of 552 households. Each comprised 92 one-bed flats and 184 two-bed flats - with six properties on each of the 23 floors.

The decision to clear and demolish the double blocks was taken by GHA in 2004 following consultation with the community. The properties were recommended for demolition following a decline in demand and popularity of the blocks, high investment and running costs and in light of the emerging regeneration plans.

The demolition of the blocks brings the regeneration plans of the Laurieston area one step closer to reality, with the now vacant land earmarked to be used for the early phases of the Laurieston Regeneration Project.

Outline planning permission has now been received for the Laurieston Masterplan, which was devised by the Laurieston Steering Group - a collaboration between Glasgow City Council, GHA, New Gorbals HA and other key partners.

The plans for the regeneration will span an estimated 15 years and include provision of new health and social services facilities, new primary school and community facilities, park, green space areas, and new commercial and retail accommodation. In addition, around 1,725 new houses will be built in the area - up to 450 of them for social rent.

David Fletcher, Head of Regeneration at GHA, said: "The demolition marks an exciting new phase."

Kirsty Fotheringham, Community Housing Manager of New Gorbals HA LHO, said: "This marks the beginning of a new era - not only for our tenants but for the wider community. It is a very exciting time for us and we are really looking forward to playing our part in the regeneration that is to come."
