The new Belmont Academy building has been officially opened by Major Sir Richard Henderson.
The £24.8m secondary school in South Ayrshire boasts state of the art teaching facilities and new improved outdoor facilities.
Sir Richard said: "I was very honoured to be invited to open such a magnificent new school. Education has a major influence on a young person’s life chances and we want South Ayrshire's young people to experience their learning in the best educational facilities. The new Belmont Academy provides that.
"Schools are at the heart of our communities, so this significant redevelopment offers wider benefits to the people of Ayr."
The new Belmont Academy is part of South Ayrshire Council's £76m investment programme in schools. During the last two years, schools have been completed at Monkton, Alloway and Barassie, with a new annexe completed at Kyle Academy. Councillor Hywel Davies, Lifelong Learning Portfolio Holder said: "The major investment in schools throughout South Ayrshire is indicative of this Council's commitment to provide strong educational foundations for all our young people.
"We want them to enjoy learning and teaching in modern fit for purpose facilities. The vibrant, high quality entertainment at the opening ceremony epitomised what the pupils at Belmont Academy have to offer."
Head teacher Alan Moir said although the old school held "wonderful" memories for generations of Ayr’s young people now the new school will provide new traditions and experiences for students in a state of the art learning environment.
"We want to thank South Ayrshire Council for their vision and foresight, and all parties involved in giving all of us such an inspiring place to work," she said.
