Plans For A Memorial Wall Of Remembrance Unveiled

Bereaved relatives and families may soon have a new way to remember their loved ones with the introduction of a new Wall of Remembrance at Falkirk Crematorium.

A meeting of the Falkirk Council Leisure, Tourism and Community Committee heard yesterday that public feedback had indicated that relatives would like to see a more permanent memorial to those they have lost and allow personalised plaques and floral tributes to be kept there.

The wall would be situated in the existing Garden of Remembrance (near the existing War Memorial) and stand two metres high using high quality facing brick as a frontage with a dedicated footpath leading to the location. Low level planting would also enhance the setting.

A personalised inscribed plaque could be installed by families and relatives for a specific time span (e.g. five or ten years) and will be available retrospectively to families who already have loved ones interred in the Garden of Remembrance.

Costs could be fixed over the chosen lease period £180 plus inscription costs for ten years and £125 plus inscription costs for five years.

The Wall would compliment the existing facilities such as the Chapel of Rest where a Book of Remembrance is already available for families and relatives. Officials will now look at how the Wall could be funded in the coming years however it is expected that Wall would cost around £30,000 to construct but would be self financing as more plaques were installed.

Falkirk Council would maintain the appearance of the plaques over their lifetime.

The committee agreed in principle to support the proposals and asked officers to explore detailed costs, funding options and final charges.
