A supermarket chain has announced plans for its first store in Forfar – creating up to 270 new jobs in the town.
Asda, along with project partners AWG Property and Deanway Development, have lodged a notice with Angus Council announcing its intention to submit a planning application for the St James House site, New Road.
The supermarket chain hopes to submit the full planning application after the completion of a community consultation period where it will be seeking views from members of the public on the proposals.
The site was granted planning permission for 51,600 sq ft of retail space following a successful appeal to the Scottish Government.
Consent for an extension to the permitted amount of food retail space will be required from Angus Council.
The proposed mixed use development would include an ASDA food store of 51,000 sq ft (gross) with a sales are of 28,000 sq ft, 22 residential units and associated car parking.
Lisa Rooke, Property Communications Manager for ASDA in Scotland, said: "ASDA is excited at the opportunity to develop a new food store in Forfar. The proposed store would bring much needed jobs to the town, as well as quality produce and our famous low prices. We look forward to working with local residents, local suppliers and the Council to bring this project to fruition."
Alex Galbraith, Deanway Development Director added: "We are committed to developing the St James House site and are delighted to be working with ASDA on this project.
"Our development plans will support the ongoing and future economic development of Forfar and will make a major contribution to the local economy, including up to 270 in-store jobs as well as temporary construction jobs throughout the project build."
